Best Actor 2000: Hritik Roshan In Fiza
Hritik earned two Best Actor nominations year 2000 for his work in Fiza and Ka Hona Pyar Hai.
In Fiza Hritik Roshan plays a man named Aman who gets lost during a riot created because of tensions betwen muslims and hindus. Unfortunately Hritik does not get a chance to make us know his charachter in the begining.
Fiza is a movie that is much more concerned in giving a message then telling a story which makes it overlong. It has some scenes that are very effective but other then that it is not anything special.
Fiza is a movie that is much more concerned in giving a message then telling a story which makes it overlong. It has some scenes that are very effective but other then that it is not anything special.
The first scenes of Aman are very good in establishing him as a regular young man who exudes kindness, he is a man that you cant help smile at and in the other early scenes his interaction are shown to be normal interactions wich makes him feel more real as a charachter. Another thing i heve to point out is that when his friends come to seek him out to give him the news of the attack there is no hesitation when he follows.
Unfortunately Aman gets lost in the riots early and the rest of the movie is about finding out what happend to him.
As the rest of the movie unfolds you find out more about him, his relationsip with his girlfriend, his ambition to create art. Another way that we know how good of a person he was is trough the actions of the other charachters, by seeing the sense of loss in their lifes ever since he vanished.
When Aman finds out thet he was denied safe haven by an police officer because of his heritage and the look on his face after hearing that is a great moment for sure.
When Fiza finaly finds Aman and he tells the story that we had only seen glimpses of before and find out how he became Jihadist after seeing the horror inflicted on him and his others like him and how no one was there to help. This the first part of the way the flashback is told is great, we see him atacking a man who had just killed another man in front of the other mans family.
What we see in his face is pure anguish as he finally lunges at the man and starts to commit the act in pure despereation, ending the other mans life.
And then his following reaction we see in his face while looking at dead bodies piled together is a look that shows how he will never be the man he used to be, his eyes showing horror over what he is seeing his body in pure shock as he moves.
We then see him being recruited into the Jihad which is handled quite akwardly (Sorry Manoj, I love you man) and is one of the parts that i feel really brought the movie down and Hritiks performance because of the segment being rushed and handled slopily even tough it is a very important milestone for his character.
But when Aman decides to return home the most intresting part of the performance begins as we see him being quite out of place back home. His body is tense, his smile is forced. He is really trying to rejoin his prior life but it is very hard for him which is something Hritik shows quite subtly. The best example would be when Jaya starts dancing to A hindi song with his neighbour, if you focus on his face you can see how hard he is trying to smile but just can't bring the smile to his face.
The rest of the performance was just what one might expect with him finding redemption in the end, nothing really special.
So in short Hritik Roshan manges to give a performance in Fiza that in some ways makes up for the film. He manges to make us feel for this charachter and makes the state he comes to be in a believable one.
