Best Actor 2000: Anil Kapoor In Pukar

Anil Kapoor earned an National Award for his performance in Pukar.
Pukar is an ok movie with that loses focus sometimes and tries to be many things at the same time which makes it inconsistent. But the best part is absoulutely the acting by Anil Kapor as Major Jaidev Rajvansh.
We are introduced to Jaidev just before a mission to save a leading politician Mr.Mishra. Anil Kapor establishes his charachter as a man with a strong sense of duty when he disobeys the colonel. When he disobeys the order he doesen't do it in an angry fashion. He disobeyed the order beccause he believed that it was his duty and the right thing to do, not because of arrogance. Even though it is a short scene Anil manages to convey that to us. After the succesfull mission to save the politician he is questioned by the colonel on why he disobeyd and Anil Kapor is very good in this scene by showing that Jaidev is nervous and have difficulity finding the right answer. That scene is very well handled by Anil Kapor as he does not make it over the top.
Anil Kapor is also very good when he goes home and you see him interact with his family and friends, and shows him just to be a regular guy. An  aspect is that the romantic relationship betwen him and Miss India. The relationship never seems false and you do begin to care about them. Anil Kapor shows Jaidev as being a very sweet guy and not just an typical action hero.
There are cases when he overacts and the where he does is mostly with Madhuri, but it does not affect the overall performance much. His relationship with Madhuri is very good and they both instantly show us that they have been friends along. Another thing Anil Kapor does is to show us from the very begining that he does not love her in a romantic fashion you can see it not only from his dialouge but also from his body laungage his expresions and how diffrent they are when compared to the way he acts with Miss India. And when he finally rejects here He does not do it in an over the top way, he rejects her tenderely trying to be reasonable and showing us his confusion over the whole situation.
Other scenes where he does overact are the scenes where he has to scream, when he does it just seems akward and wrong. Anil Kapor is very good when he has to show himself as a regular guy but when he has to be rough he is not as effective that the fighting scenes seems really fake and the sounds seems to be straight from a carton does not make it better. Still he does manage to show us how diffrent he is when he is working and when he is at home, and manages to show us two sides of this person.
But the best performance have not come yet. Jaidev gets suspected of being a traitor when the terrorist in responsible of the kidnaping gets lose because of leaked information. We see him in disbelief over the whole situation and devastated when he finds out that he is a suspect. Anil Kapoor show us Jaidev finding himself more and more disillusioned, by trying to make himself and others believe that Everything will be fine. There is a truly heartbreaking scene when Jaidev goes to his neighbours house after a couple of drinks and breaks down over himself being under surveilance a treated as a criminal. It is touching scene and Anil Kapor manages to make it so natural and not over the top.
The transition from an army officer to an depressed man is so natural and even tough the movie and some of his costars does bring him down manages to give a natural and strong performance and for that i give:
