Best Actor 2000: Sanjay Dutt In Mission Kashmir

Best Actor 2000: Sanjay Dutt in Mission Kashmir

Sanjay Dutt recieved a Filmfare nomination for playing Inayat Khan.

Mission Kashmir is an ok but overlong and sappy film about a police officer who adopts the son of a family he has massacred while searching for a terrorist. The foster son finds out what the stepfather did which creates a conflict with the Kashmir crisis as a backdrop.

Sanjay Dutt is very good in the opening scene that also serves in his introduction. In this first scene we see him berate a man under his command who has gotten into situation that could end with fatal consequences.

Inayat begins with berating him for being so careless and does so with a direct no nonsense approach that suits the situation well, showing himself as a boss pointing out an employes stupid misstake. He is alos quite intense when berating him and does not make the following action as something obvious, Instead he shows Inayat as a man who willing to let a man die to save others.

Which is why Inayat make it believable that he would leave the private on the bridge because he manages to make it seem like the reasonable decision, leaving the man to what would likely be his death. He does it in such casual way that it actually comes as a surprise when he decides to save him from a likely death.

The following scene that we have with Inayat is the scene with the doctor treating. They are both very good at showing that this is a situation that they are both accustomed to, he getting hurt and the doctor patching him up, making it clear to the audience that this is more of relationship between two friend then the relationship of a doctor and his patient. Sanjay portrays Inayat as being comfortable and is good at showing that Inayat is like any regular person interacting with his friend.

The next scene we have is quite a heavy scene for Sanjay that could go extremely wrong if portrayed in the wrong way, the scene I'm talking about is of course the scene when he is trying to get treatment for his son who had an accident. Thank fully this is portrayed in a good way by Sanjay Dutt. He enters the room with comforting words to his wife and for himself by saying the it is just a bruise and everything will be fine. Sanjay is very good showing that these words are more used for reassurance showing us that Inayat. His reaction when hearing that the doctor won't give his son treatment because of his fear that terrorists threat of dead to anyone who helps the police is a great moment. He is very good showing the desperation in his voice trying to convince the doctor that he will be safe from any threats. When that doesn't work he is quite good when lashing out and threatening to kill him. At this moment he shows Inayat as forgetting any protocol and losing himself in him emotional state, which he snaps out of when coming to terms with the doctors situation. But when he finally reaches the point of no return once again showing his desperation asking for help and gets rejected again by this other doctor in fear of terrorists he does not hesitate in pulling out his gun using it to get what he needs. Sanjay is good at showing Inayat as man who i capable of doing morally questionable choices when the sitatution calls for it. Sanjay is truly heartbreaking showing Inayat's sorrow over losing his son and the way he copes with it during the rest of the movie creating quite powerful scenes.

What happened before is also a good setup for what Inayat does next which is killing the terrorists and the leader of these terrorists, the grout that threaten the doctors from giving any form of treatment to anyone who has a connection with the police. Inayat shows this as an act that makes it possible to get revenge, not caring who he is shooting at.

After the attack an intresting relationships starts which is the relation between Altaf and Inayat, Altaf being the son of a a civillian couple that died during the attack because of Inayat. In the beginning when having invited Inayat over to live with them Sanjay is good at showing a slight discomfort over the whole situation a contrast to his who readily opens up to Altaaf. It takes a little more time for Inayat to completely open up to Altaaf which fits his character well and shows himself as becoming emotionally attached and caring towards Altaaf.

But all of this is crushed when Altaaf after finding out the truth attempts to kill Inayat. Dutt is once again good at showing that Inayat is capable of violence when faced with extreme situations which is shown when he returns fire agains Altaaf without hesitation.

The following time on the movie spent on Inyat is him coping with the situation that Altaaf has joined a terrorist organization and trying to make sure that no lives are lost by trying to find the people who are a threat. Sanjay basically shows Inayat trying to be as impartial as possible and so his job, which becomes difficult when he finds out that his wife has contact with Altaaf, leading to a confrontation with his wife where he gives her the choice between himself and Altaaf and he is very good at showing that this is more of a personal request then professional.

The rest of his performance is all about meeting Ataaf to try to make him understand. Dutt is good at showing this goal to be a way to honor his wife and is appropriately passionate making the ending a satisfying resolution.

Sanjay Dutt gives a very good performance as Inayat Khan showing him as an assertive man trying to do the right thing but also showing him as a man with flaws and not a typical hero, so good that i
wished that the film hade all his focus on him.
